Second fast-tracked Redland City project in a fortnight
A second Redland City transport hub will be fast-tracked for planning and development following this morning’s announcement that the Weinam Creek marine precinct has been granted Priority Development Area (PDA) status by the State Government.
The announcement from Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney comes just a fortnight after news that Toondah Harbour at Cleveland will be recommended as Queensland’s second PDA (16 May).
“This news means the Weinam Creek transport hub will be transformed into a waterfront recreation precinct, recognising its role as the gateway to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” said Redland City Mayor Karen Williams.
“The precinct is crying out for a project to help it realise its full potential as a bayside area.
“Two priority development projects announced for Redland City in as many weeks marks a coming of age for the Redlands, showcasing what we have to offer and building a stronger local economy and community.
“The Redlands has always been a great place to live, visit and work; and now these announcements mean it is also recognised as a great place to invest.
“I would like to acknowledge the work of Member for Redlands Peter Dowling, who has been a tireless and vocal advocate in helping convince the government of the development potential of Weinam Creek.”
Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said the PDA declaration was a massive vote of confidence in southern Redland City.
“This development will deliver the residential, transport and entertainment precinct we have been awaiting for years,” Cr Edwards said.
“It will be a massive boost for the mainland and pave the way for the vast potential of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands to be realised.
“Importantly, the development will also provide the opportunity to finally resolve the parking issue that has plagued Weinam Creek for years.”
Achieving PDA status means both Redlands transport hub projects will now be referred to the Queensland Governor for approval.
“These projects will generate local jobs and local economic growth,” Cr Williams said.
“Both Weinam Creek and Toondah Harbour are the starting point for visiting our fantastic island destinations so these projects will not only benefit the Redlands but also Queensland’s tourism industry.”
The Weinam Creek announcement also follows a very successful breakfast for business and investors hosted in the Redlands recently, at which Mr Seeney announced Toondah Harbour as the state’s second area to be granted fast-tracked planning and development status. The only other declared PDA is the Commonwealth Games village on the Gold Coast.
