Please note the address for the Russell Island Translink Information session is the Russell Island Recreation Hall, 1 Alison Crescent, Russell Island and will be held again on Saturday, June 15, from 2pm- 4pm.
The countdown is well and truly on, with the Southern Moreton Bay Island (SMBI) passenger ferry services set to join TransLink’s integrated public transport network on July 1.
Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams and Member for Redlands for Peter Dowling encouraged island residents to get themselves ready for the upcoming integration by attending the ‘Countdown to TransLink’ community events being held on the islands this Friday and Saturday (June 14-15).
“We want to make sure SMBI residents are onboard and ready to reap the benefits of go card from July 1,” Councillor Williams said.
“go card will enable islanders to make substantial weekly and yearly savings on their transport costs, and we’ve invited TransLink to come out this Friday (June 14) on Macleay Island and Saturday (June 15) on Russell Island and explain more of the features of their system to residents.
“To help make sure SMBI is go ready on July 1, TransLink has donated 3,750 adult, child, senior and concession go cards for distribution to island residents at the community events.
”I would like to thank TransLink for responding to my request for this concession. This generous offer will directly benefit so many islanders.
“So islanders can receive a go card that is correct for them, they will need to show the necessary identification with proof address and valid concession cards (if applicable). A limit of one card person will apply.”
TransLink Deputy Director-General Matt Longland said the SMBI integration was the first major extension of TransLink’s network since it was formed in 2008.
“Our move into the Southern Moreton Bay islands is a major milestone for TransLink and for the local community,” Mr Longland said.
“For some time now SMBI residents have been asking about becoming part of the TransLink network, and we’ve been busy doing all the behind-the-scenes work to make it happen on July 1.”
Mr Dowling said he encouraged everyone to take the opportunity to attend the community events.
“The community events will be an opportunity for islanders to get more information about using go card, find out which bus routes is right for them and to learn where SMBI sits in TransLink’s broader public transport network throughout South East Queensland,” Mr Dowling said.
“Once SMBI is on our network, islanders will be able to enjoy the convenience and ease of go card which removes the need for carrying around cash.
“Not only are fares on go card cheaper than current ticketing products, customers with go card are also entitled to free travel initiatives such as ‘9+Free’ and ‘1,2, Free.’”
Redland City Council and TransLink’s ‘Countdown to TransLink’ community events will be held at the Macleay Island Community Hall on Friday, June 14 from 11am-1pm and the Russell Island Recreation Hall, 1 Alison Crescent, Russell Island, on Saturday, June 15, from 2pm-4pm.
