Redlanders who sign up for the national Garage Sale Trail on 26 October may spot a familiar face among the bargain hunters.
Logie-nominated screen and stage actor Paul Bishop, aka Sergeant Ben Stewart of the long-running hit police drama Blue Heelers and now Redland City Council’s Division 10 representative, can’t wait to hit the trail.
“I will certainly be garage ‘sale-ing’ on the day … it’s like a local version of eBay except you get to meet the buyers and sellers and check the quality of the stuff in advance,’’ the self-confessed bargain lover said.
“Every garage sale is like a home shop full of second-hand goodies and the best part is that local people meet one another, share ideas, share stories and share their stuff.
“It can make money for some, save money for others and really make a difference to our waste stream by recycling unwanted clutter that others may prize. And it’s also great for the local economy. Money flows but value stays in our own area.
“I found this red lounge at a local garage sale and it was only $200 … bargain!’’
As Redland City Council’s Arts, Culture and Innovation spokesperson, Cr Bishop has urged residents to dust the cobwebs off unwanted, pre-loved items and be part of the Garage Sale Trail.
He said the community event with a difference, which was open to anyone from individuals to community groups, was also a great opportunity to reduce waste while raising money either for themselves or a good cause.
“Residents can make some cash from unwanted possessions, while community groups, schools and charities can join the event to raise much-needed funds,’’ Cr Bishop said.
“All you need to do is log onto the Garage Sale Trail website and register, so potential buyers know where to find the bargains.
“Buyers can also use the website to create their own treasure trail to follow.”
This is the first year Redland City Council has signed up for the event, which is now backed by 110 other councils across Australia.
“Council has already registered a number of garage sales and registrations are completely free,’’ Cr Bishop said.
