New update from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services
UPDATE: #StradbrokeIsland – #QFES crews as of 2pm commenced backburning operations on the north and north-eastern side of Dunwich to help increase the buffer zone and strengthen containment lines.
The East Coast Road is currently open to traffic but Queensland Police Service (QPS) personnel, who are located at each end of the road may close the road as the smoke hazard in the area increases.
The evacuation centre at Dunwich is still open for people wishing to relocate or seek refuge. A QFES Bushfire Safety Officer and Volunteer Community Educator are onsite at the Dunwich Community Centre to provide advice to the public. They will be onsite until 5pm today and again tomorrow.
There is a wind change expected from the east, north-east later in the evening. The backburning operations are expected to create a large and significant smoke hazard in Central and North Stradbroke Island, adjacent Moreton Bay Islands, Sunshine Coast and South Burnett. Stradbroke and Moreton Bay Islands and possibly Brisbane may also experience ash.
A Community meeting will be held at 10am tomorrow at the Dunwich Community Centre to update residents on the current fire status.
The fire currently poses no threat to properties. Residents are asked to remain vigilant.
