Mayor’s Message
Redland City is on the move.
Economic activity is hotting up, partly as a result of Redland City Council’s Open for Business mantra.
Our Priority Development Areas at Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek are approaching the Expression of Interest stage. These projects have enormous potential to transform the two sites into attractive multi-use waterfront precincts that will be destinations in their own right.
But not all the action is at the waterfront. The McKenzie Aged Care Group is investing around $80 million in high-quality facilities at Cleveland and Capalaba that will offer 280 beds and more than 300 new jobs.
The State Government has responded to my invitation to consider “decentralising” from the Brisbane CBD and is reviewing government department accommodation needs in our city.
This news comes hot on the heels of the receipt by Council of our first two applications under the Cleveland CBD Incentive Scheme for major mixed use residential and commercial developments. Recent commercial lease deals within the CBD also indicate a growing level of confidence in our city.
At Capalaba there has been a multi-million-dollar commercial investment and I am advised another major commercial site sale is imminent.
Residential approvals are accelerating and house sales improving as our economy picks up.
It all points to more people looking seriously at the Redlands is the best place to live, work and to do business.
Council streamlining customer contact services
Providing streamlined, efficient one-stop business services is a key focus for Council’s Integrated Customer Contact Centres at Cleveland and Capalaba.
Many customers will have already noticed the difference in the way telephone inquiries are handled at Council and new simplified procedures for many areas of public inquiry.
This work is continuing with Council aiming to bring all key business areas into this service by mid–year (including more complex areas of inquiry such as planning, health and building and plumbing services).
Meanwhile, Council’s telephone number 3829 8999 is the single number to call for all Council inquiries.
Council tightens asbestos handling at transfer stations
Local residents and in particular ‘Do it yourself’ enthusiasts and tradies need to be aware of changes regarding handling material that may contain asbestos at our transfer stations.
The changes have been introduced to protect staff and the community from potential asbestos exposure and mean if there is any doubt material may contain asbestos it will not be allowed past the transfer station gatehouse unless wrapped and sealed.
This includes fibro, cement sheeting, asbestos cement (ac sheeting), Hardiplank, Hardiflex, Super Six roof sheeting, Villaboard, Millboard, insulating board, vinyl sheet flooring, backing material and tiles.
The only way this material will be accepted is if it is double wrapped in durable plastic and fully sealed in loads less than ten square metres.
Litter-bugs beware
Anyone planning on illegally dumping in the Redlands should remember to smile because you may be caught on camera.
Council is rolling out security cameras at key illegal dumping sites across the city to stamp out the unsavoury practice.
Signs will be erected to advise residents of potential camera locations, with the cameras to be rotated periodically to ensure greater coverage across the city.
PDA Community survey
A community survey on the Redlands’ two waterfront redevelopment projects was conducted recently as an additional layer of engagement during the statutory consultation period.
The telephone survey of 300 residents canvassed community attitudes regarding priority development for Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek.
Only working smoke alarms save lives…
It is almost that time of year when residents are reminded to change the batteries in their smoke alarms.
Each year on 1 April people are encouraged to change their smoke alarm batteries to ensure they are in working order.
The reminder is particularly important for those who may find it difficult to change smoke alarm batteries due to being elderly or disabled. This includes Redland Home Assist Secure clients who are encouraged to contact Redland Home Assist Secure on 3383 3030.

Freedom of Entry to Redland City for RAAF
Get ready to cheer as the Redlands celebrates the awarding of Freedom of Entry to the City to the No. 95 Wing of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at 11am on Saturday 12 April 2014.
Around 150 members of No. 95 Wing of the RAAF, supported by local air cadets and a band, will gather outside the Redland Performing Arts Centre for the march along Middle Street, Cleveland.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams will inspect the parade and present the official scroll offering Freedom of Entry to Redland City to Group Captain Peter Davis, who will formally request permission to march through Cleveland.
The marchers will then be challenged by police outside the Redland Art Gallery, before passing Library Square, where they will halt to offer traditional salutes to the Mayor and Air Commodore Tim Innes.
The event will celebrate the Redlands’ proud military past and will build stronger links with the RAAF. It also takes on greater significance in the lead-up to Anzac Day and next year’s centenary of the start of World War I and is a wonderful way for Redlanders to show their regard for the Australian defence forces in defending our way of life and promoting peace and stability around the world.
All Redlanders are encouraged to show their support and cheer on the contingent along the route.
