Signs have been erected at Main Beach Coochiemudlo Island to advise residents of the presence of Lyngbya (Lyngbya majuscule) a naturally occurring blue-green algae that can cause irritation if people come in contact with it.
The presence of Lyngbya is thought to be related to the recent high temperatures and is not uncommon for waters around the Redlands and Moreton Bay.
The signs are precautionary only to inform residents of the presence of the material and Council will continue to monitor the area. No beaches have been closed as a result and there are no restrictions on the use of local beaches or waterways.
