Local sporting teams will benefit from a more than $700,000 lighting upgrade at Judy Holt Park thanks to a partnership between Redland City Council and the State Government.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams welcomed an announcement today from Minister for Sport and Recreation Steve Dickson and State Member for Capalaba Steve Davies that the Queensland Government had committed $100,000 from the Get Playing grants program to the lighting upgrade.
“This announcement is great news for Redland City sports teams and families and with Council already committing more than $600,000 to this project the combined funding will mean we can dramatically improve lighting at this popular sporting field to competition standard,” she said.
“Council’s contribution is part of a three-year $3 million program to upgrade lighting at sporting fields across the city. Judy Holt Park is the first cab off the ranks and work will start early next year.”
Division 8 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Alan Beard said Judy Holt Park was a key sporting location and the lighting upgrade would make it an even more popular venue.
“This Get Playing grant to the Redlands Rugby Union and Recreation Club is welcome news,” he said.
“Council supported the Club with its application and this lighting upgrade will open the way for more night-time games and training.”
“I would like to congratulate the club on securing this funding and commend Mr Davies for his advocacy on behalf of the club and the State Government for delivering the funding.
“We are seeing today what can be achieved when the local community and different levels of government work together.”
Council’s sport and recreation spokesperson Cr Paul Gleeson said this financial year Council would spend more than $1 million of the $3 million earmarked for sports field lighting upgrades.
“The Redlands is home to many passionate sporting clubs, teams and families that love to watch their children enjoying our local sporting fields each weekend and Council is committed to ensuring these sporting fields are of a high standard,” he said.
“As part of this commitment Council earlier this year identified sporting fields that required lighting upgrades to meet competition standard.
“Over the next three years sports field lighting across the city will be upgraded, benefiting local sports fans and families and adding to the Redlands’ reputation as a healthy and active city.”
