Redland City Council will implement special parking and traffic arrangements to help everyone enjoy this Australia Day in the Redlands.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said with its beautiful coastline and parks, the Redlands was always a popular location for people celebrating Australia Day.
“Redlands’ beaches, parks and reserves are always popular over Australia Day and Council has taken steps to help everyone enjoy the day safely,” she said.
“This will include putting additional traffic and litter patrols on to ensure people remain safe and the city stays tidy.
“In the lead up to the Australia Day long weekend Council has also been working with the local police who will be patrolling key areas in the interest of public safety.
“While Council is doing our part, we also need residents to assist by not littering, following the direction of authorities, remaining patient and respecting others during the busy period.
“People should also remember that facilities such as barbecues are there for everybody, so be considerate of others.’’
One of the key areas that will see additional Council officers on Australia Day will be the popular Wellington Point recreation reserve.
Councillor for the area Wendy Boglary (Division 1) said arrangements included a free Council shuttle bus operating along Main Road between the reserve and Wellington Point shops.
“Wellington Point is a wonderful spot to spend Australia Day but its popularity means it gets very busy, so these special measures will help everyone have a great time while also staying safe,’’ Cr Boglary said.
“Council officers and police will be there to assist, including directing drivers to available parking spaces in and outside the reserve.
“Council has also reopened the swimming areas that had been closed because of the recent Morbakka Jellyfish threat and Surf Lifesaving Queensland will be on hand throughout the day as a precaution.
“A free shuttle bus will run from 7am to 6pm between the reserve and Wellington Point shops, as well as picking up from the Wellington Point Community Hall car park on Birkdale Road.”
Over the Australia Day long weekend the existing dog-walking regulations will remain in place, including being able to walk dogs on-leash at Wellington Point Reserve before 9am and after 4pm on the day.
Dogs are also allowed on-leash on the sandbar (that is exposed at low tide) between the reserve and King Island during these times, but between 9am and 4pm dogs are prohibited.
The popular Wellington Point boat ramp will be available throughout the day, but it is expected to be busy and once the boat trailer parking spaces are full, users will be directed to use legal parking spaces outside the reserve.
Cars without trailers are not permitted to park in boat trailer parking spaces and everyone is asked to remain patient and respect others. Police officers will be on patrol to ensure public safety.
