The movement, drama and fragility of the tidal flows and debris that impact our coastal areas are the focus of a new exhibition opening at Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba from Saturday 31 January.
Passage, featuring Moreton Bay artists Pattie Murray and Sandra Pearce, takes a journey through the intertidal zone, exploring the past and present through the mediums of paper, porcelain and natural fibres.
Council’s cultural services spokesperson Cr Lance Hewlett said with a focus on the relationship between land and sea, Passage was a fitting exhibition to be featured in the Redlands.
“With the Redlands being a city of islands with long stretches of coastline, this exhibition is sure to speak to all Redlands’ locals and visitors,” he said.
“In Passage, the artists explore the tidal flows and debris that impact on our coastline through both individual and collaborative interpretations.
“Together their artworks express the emotion and memories evoked by the passage of water between land and sea, mirroring the textures, shapes and interwoven nature of the materials washed up on our beaches.”
Cr Hewlett said the exhibition includes art installations that use a variety of mediums to showcase the natural expression that existed in coastal communities.
“Both artists use their own unique styles to illustrate the movement and frailty of the coast,” he said.
“Murray works with traditionally thrown porcelain vessels and hand built sculptures, incorporating drawing, etching and painting techniques, while Pearce creates sculptural works with natural materials using papermaking and printmaking processes.
“In addition to the exhibition, which runs until Saturday 14 March, both artists will also be holding workshops in February where participants can learn their techniques.”
