Councillors unanimously elected Cr Wendy Boglary as Redland City’s new Deputy Mayor at a Special Meeting today.
Division 1 Councillor since 2008, Cr Boglary said it was a huge honour to be chosen by her fellow Councillors.
“To have been elected by my community to serve my third term as Division 1 Councillor is a huge privilege; and now for the Mayor and my fellow Councillors to entrust me with the position of Deputy Mayor is truly humbling,” she said.
“Being Deputy Mayor is not something I take lightly and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities it will present.
“As the level of government closest to the community it is important Council reflects the needs of residents as a united and trustworthy team.
“I look forward to supporting the Mayor and Councillors and I truly believe that the Mayor and I together are a formidable team and our diversity of views only makes us stronger.”
Mayor Karen Williams congratulated Cr Boglary on her appointment as Deputy Mayor.
“Cr Boglary will do a great job as Deputy Mayor and I am looking forward to working closely with her,” Cr Williams said.
Today’s appointment of Redland City’s new Deputy Mayor follows the official swearing in of all Councillors at a special ceremony last night.
During last night’s ceremony Mayor Williams congratulated the new Council, saying that it was now incumbent on all Councillors to work as a team in the best interests of the city.
“We have been afforded a special privilege by the people of the Redlands and have been collectively entrusted to lead this city for the next four years,” she said.
“Our job is to make our community’s vision workable and in the best interests of all, while actively preparing the way for it to become a reality.
“I believe a collaborative unified Council will allow us to best deliver on the community’s vision and provide a future that Redlanders want.”
Today’s decision will see Cr Boglary serve as Deputy Mayor for a one-year period, with Councillors to then vote on the person to serve as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.
At today’s special meeting the new Council also adopted the meeting schedule for the year with the first full General Meeting scheduled for Wednesday 27 April.
