Redland City Council will spend more than $25 million to make it easier and safer for residents to get around the City.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council’s 2016-17 budget provided a boost for roads, transport upgrades and pedestrian and cycle paths.
“Transport and traffic are major issues for all growing communities, with this budget continuing Council’s efforts to improve our road, public transport and cycleway networks,’’ Cr Williams said.
“More than $8.3 million has been earmarked for road resurfacing alone, with another $4.5 million to fund pavement rehabilitation and more than $2 million for other paths and cycleways.
“These are significant amounts for a Council of our size, with this year’s program going beyond basic maintenance to provide real improvements for residents.’’
The funding includes $2.47 million for the green-seal program on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and another $1.11 million for Coochiemudlo Island road resealing and $1.55 million for improving Collins Street and School of Arts Road at Redland Bay.
“Almost $1.37 million has also been earmarked for bus shelters across the City,” Cr Williams said.
“Council also remains committed to alternative forms of transport, with $650,000 committed to the Tindappah Drive to Beveridge Road section of the Moreton Bay Cycleway at Thornlands.
“Overall, nearly $5 million will be spent on footpaths, bikeways, carparks, bus stops and shelters.”’
Cr Williams said she expected the new Community Infrastructure Fund would lead to further local street and traffic improvements.
