More than 200 homes in the Redlands are without power as destructive winds and heavy rainfall head towards the Redlands, expected to peak between 6pm and 9pm this evening
Rainfall totals of 200mm remain likely over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of isolated falls exceeding 400mm and accompanying strong winds over 100km across the South East
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said there is an increased risk to North Stradbroke Island, the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and Coochiemudlo Island as the storm moves across the coastline this evening.
“These islands may become isolated and suffer power outages as the storm intensifies as it crosses the coast.
“Despite opening two centres to accommodate potentially stranded Islanders I am pleased to say that everyone seems to have made their way safely to their home or are staying with family or friends.
“As a result the centres at Redland Bay Community Hall, Weinam Street, Redland Bay, and Redland Performing Arts Centre, 2-16 Middle Street, Cleveland will close at 6pm.
“I congratulate islanders once again for their planning and resilience,” Cr Williams said.
“There remains potential for flash flooding on Redlands roads so please drive carefully and heed all warnings. Remember … if it is flooded, forget it!
“The Local Disaster Management Group has been stood up to manage emergency operations with police, SES and Energex staff on our islands in anticipation of the increasing storm intensity.”
