Residents are urged to be prepared for a severe weather event expected to begin on Friday, with storms, strong winds and rainfall continuing over the weekend.

By late Sunday it is expected that the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Owen, currently a Category 3 system in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, will reach Redlands Coast where it will likely be an east coast low.
It is expected to bring continued strong winds and rainfall across Redlands Coast through to Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
The North Stradbroke Island fire continues to burn lightly within containment lines at the far southern end of the island and there is no immediate threat to properties on Russell Island or North Stradbroke Island.
Smoke is moving to the south.
Ground crews are monitoring and strengthening containment lines. Ground crews from Russell, Macleay and Lamb islands are keeping watch.
Storm safety:
- Stay off the roads unless it is absolutely necessary for you to travel.
- Be careful of traffic signals that aren’t working if you are on the roads and give way to your right at intersections.
- Stay away from fallen power lines.
- Do not cross flooded roads or swim in open water courses.
- Check on your neighbour if you know they are elderly or infirm.
- Avoid food spoilage. If you are without power avoid opening your freezer and if your food has thawed, do not refreeze it again later.

Ember patrols on Russell Island. Firefighters are patrolling Sandy Point at the southern end of Russell Island for possible embers from the fire at nearby North Stradbroke Island.
There is no immediate threat to properties on Russell Island or North Stradbroke Island.
Russell Island residents are asked to remain vigilant and report embers immediately to Triple 0.
The Rural Fire Service has been closely monitoring the island.
Thick smoke has been reported across the southern end of Russell Island.
This is likely to continue and may increase across the day.
Those in smoke-affected should take steps to protect themselves, including reducing physical activity outside, shutting windows and doors when inside, keeping medication close and consider moving temporarily to another location if sensitive to smoke.
The fire is continuing to burn within containment lines at the far southern end of North Stradbroke Island.
Back burning continued yesterday and overnight to contain the fire, and was successful. Water bombing also continued.
Ground crews are monitoring the fire and strengthening the containment lines on North Stradbroke Island.
Back burning will continue today. Water bombing is also likely to continue.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and QYAC are jointly managing the fire operations with support from QFES and Redland City Council.
Protect yourself in smoky conditions:
- minimise your physical activity outdoors. People with pre-existing lung or heart conditions, in particular, should rest as much as possible and keep away from the smoke
- when indoors, keep the windows and doors closed. If you have an air conditioner, turn it on and switch it to ‘recycle or re-circulate’
- if your home gets too hot for comfort or is letting in a lot of smoky air, try to visit an air-conditioned community library or shopping centre (if it is safe to do so)
- when indoors, avoid other sources of air pollution including smoke from cigarettes and woodstoves
- if there is a break in smoky conditions, take the opportunity to ventilate your home to improve indoor air quality
- anyone with a lung or heart condition should keep at least seven days’ worth of medication on hand. Those with asthma should follow their personal asthma treatment plan
- anyone experiencing breathing problems or chest should seek medical advice immediately
- individuals who are particularly sensitive to smoky conditions should consider temporarily moving away from the smoke-affected area and staying with a friend or relative.

Heavy smoke from the fire on the southern end of North Stradbroke Island continues to move towards the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, and in particular across Russell Island at Sandy Point. Residents of the southern end of Russell Island should be aware of the ways to be safe in smoky conditions, including staying indoors, shutting doors and windows, keeping medications close and, if sensitive to smoke, consider leaving the smoke-affected area. A fire is currently burning at the far southern end of North Stradbroke Island.
There are no immediate threats to townships and the fire is within containment lines.
The fire is the result of continued smouldering and hot spots in inaccessible areas of 18 Mile Swamp, where the fire was burning last week.
Back burning overnight to contain the fire was successful.
Back burning will continue today. Water bombing is also likely to continue.
A light wind is currently blowing smoke towards the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, particularly Russell Island.
Russell Island residents should remain vigilant and report any embers moving to that island to Triple 000.
QFES has three fire appliances on Russell Island monitoring the situation. Additional police are also on Russell Island.
With wind changes throughout the day, smoke may also impact North Stradbroke Island communities.
