Do your natural environment a favour on Trees for Weeds Day and take shopping bags or buckets of weeds to Redlands IndigiScapes nursery and exchange them for free, easy-to-keep plants native to Redlands Coast.
Mayor Karen Williams said Council was offering up to five locally native plants per person – one for each bag or bucket of weeds surrendered.
“Trees for Weeds Day is a great incentive for us all to take a look at what is growing in our backyards and make sure they are free of invasive weeds that threaten native wildlife and habitats,” she said.

“Some of our most common garden plants are prolific weeds, which compete with native species that provide essential food and shelter for a variety of wildlife.
“When these weeds escape into surrounding bushland they can also impact the local wildlife corridors here on Redlands Coast.
“Trees for Weeds Day is a great way to support Council’s commitment to put one million native plants in the ground by 2026, as well as a lovely way for locals to prepare their gardens for spring.”
Cr Williams said Trees for Weeds Day events would be held on the mainland and bay islands this year.

Trees for Weeds Day – mainland event
What: Swap one shopping bag or bucket of weeds for one free native plant (up to five plants per person)
Date: Saturday, 7 September 2019
Time: 9am to 1pm
Where: IndigiScapes Native Nursery, Runnymede Road, Capalaba (access via MyHorizon entrance and car park)
All weeds are accepted, but this year’s focus is on:
- Devil’s fig
- Singapore daisy
- Salvinia
- Leucaena

- Coochiemudlo Island jetty
- Macleay Island Progress Hall, 2 Russell Terrace
- Point Lookout Bushcare Nursery, Headland Park, corner East Coast Road and Kennedy Drive
- Russell Island Public Pool car park, High Street
- Lamb Island, jetty car park
- Karragarra Community Gardens, The Esplanade: 10am to noon
