Seven community group-led projects that promoted and celebrated many of Redlands Coast’s villages were made possible this year through more than $66,000 in Redland City Council grants.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council’s Village Events and Activation Grant program was developed to help activate Redlands Coast villages and investment in local business.
“The grants support not-for-profit community organisations and village traders to work collaboratively to deliver activities and experiences that bring people together,” Cr Williams said.

“This included two community Christmas events, which were held earlier this month in Redland Bay and Wellington Point.
“A number of multi-colour solar lights will be installed in trees along Bloomfield Street, Cleveland by 23 December 2022 to encourage late night shopping, night markets and special themed events such as Valentine’s Day.
“Other events funded through this grant program included an exhibition and film launch in Dunwich (Goompi) and free musical entertainment in a Raby Bay park.”
Cr Williams said the grants were another way for Council to support communities to provide more fun and engaging events and activities for residents and visitors.
“In the process, the Village Events and Activation Grant program aims to build community connection and resilience and will stimulate economic activity in our centres,” she said.
“The collaboration between traders and community groups has been wonderful to see, and some traders have already indicated they are considering opportunities to hold regular community events in their centres, which is a great result.”
Projects awarded funding through the 2021-22 Village Events and Activation Grant program were:
- Southern Moreton Bay Islands Chamber of Commerce – $12,000 for screenings of the Island Magic documentary.
- North Stradbroke Island Arts and Pottery Group – $12,000 for Winter Arts Trail 2022 Community Galleries in Dunwich and Point Lookout.
- Goompi Give and Grow – $6812.70 for an exhibition and film launch titled Connection to Quandamooka Country Across Generations: Goompi Foreshore.
- The Cage Youth Foundation Ltd – $12,000 for a Redland Bay Village community event.
- Bayside Community Radio Association Inc (Bay FM 100.3) – $12,000 to illuminate Poinciana trees in Bloomfield Street, Cleveland to encourage late night shopping, night markets or staged events.
- Redland City Bands Inc – $1244 for a Band in the Park project with free musical entertainment.
- Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce – $10,555 for a Wellington Point Community Christmas Street Market.
