National Reconciliation Week was celebrated on Redlands Coast with a networking function with Quandamooka representatives and businesses.
Redland City Council hosted the event on Friday 16 June 2023 at Dunwich/Goompi on North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah.
Mayor Karen Williams said National Reconciliation Week provided another opportunity to recognise and appreciate the social, cultural and spiritual importance of the Quandamooka People, who have lived on Redlands Coast for about 21,000 years.
“The theme for 2023 was all about finding tangible ways to make a difference in regards to reconciliation in our day-to-day lives, in our homes, our workplaces and when we are out and about.
“This extends to when we play or go to watch sport, so I am delighted Redland City Council will again be a proud partner and supporter of the QRL’s Hostplus Cup Indigenous recognition match, alongside Wynnum Manly Seagulls, Deadly Choices and Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health.”
Redland City Council has supported the Indigenous Recognition round match with $15,000 in sponsorship and $1500 in Quandamooka Cultural Awareness Funding.
This year’s round 21 Indigenous Recognition match will be played at the Ron Stark Oval in Dunwich/Goompi on Sunday August 13.
Alongside the main event, Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Deadly Choices will also host rugby league and community health clinics and initiatives designed to encourage positive health outcomes in the community.
The National Reconciliation Week event included a lunch, traditional smoking ceremony and a performance by Yulu-Burri-Ba dancers.
Council delivered the event with the support of the Queensland Government’s Department of Seniors, Disability Services and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships through the 2023 Celebrating Reconciliation Grants.
