Redland City Council is delighted to announce the receipt of a generous philanthropic gift of $300,000 over three years to the Redland Art Gallery from Haymans Electrical.
This funding will be used to deliver a Create Exchange program of artist-residency style exhibitions and activations within the Redlands Cultural Precinct that will encourage collaborations and champion community engagement.
The inaugural Create Exchange project will run from 7 April to 4 June 2024 and showcase the talents of Quandamooka mother and daughter artists, Sonja Carmichael and Elisa Jane Carmichael.
Their artist residency and exhibition, titled Ngumpi, reflects a deep connection to Redlands Coast and ties to family and Country.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the Create Exchange program would provide residents and visitors to Redland Art Gallery with different avenues to engage with the artists’ works, enriching the cultural fabric of our city.
“Redland Art Gallery is a flagship cultural asset, and we take immense pride in being one of only four galleries in the state selected for this additional funding support,” Cr Williams said.
“This support will allow the gallery to strengthen ties and cultural exchange with Quandamooka People through art and cultural practice.”
Sonja and Elisa Jane Carmichael are Ngugi women of Quandamooka, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) in south-east Queensland.
Their work centres on ancestral knowledge, matrilineal connections and ongoing relationships to the sands, lands and sacred waters of Quandamooka.
The exhibition will feature new and existing woven works made with natural and recycled materials as well as print media.
About their work, Sonja and Elisa said: “In featuring this work, we feel a sense of strength in togetherness. The exhibition will share our stories of lived experiences and how we see Country today.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to get involved in activities such as yarning circles and weaving rooms while Ngumpi is exhibiting from 7 April to 4 June 2024.
Create Exchange is supported by Haymans Electrical and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
