Redland City Council has partnered with Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) to enhance emergency communications and boating safety in Moreton Bay.
Council was approached by VMR, a partner in the Redland City Local Disaster Management Group, seeking a location on North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah to install a marine radio repeater.
Council offered the use of an existing telemetry mast at its Donahue Street Reservoir at Point Lookout.
The recent installation has shown promising results, with successful communication established with VMR Raby Bay and the Coast Guard at Redcliffe and Southport from a hand-held device at the Surf Life Saving Club at Point Lookout.
This initiative not only improves communication but also contributes to overall boating safety, allowing for better response times when incidents occur in Moreton Bay.
The boosted signal from the radio repeater could also be used in times of disaster to coordinate Council resources across Redlands Coast if other forms of communication are down.
