Redland City Council is advising people to prepare themselves, their pets, and their properties now ahead of the expected arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that TC Alfred is expected to make landfall on the south-east Queensland coast from late Thursday to Friday morning.
With intense rain, flash flooding, damaging wind gusts and hazardous surf possible for Redlands Coast in coming days, impacts for people in coastal areas of the city could be significant.
Residents on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, Coochiemudlo Island and North Stradbroke Island need to decide now whether they will leave the island, as ferry operations are being impacted from today, Tuesday 4 March.
Travel to and from the islands, except for emergencies, will not be possible when services cease.
People should check with their ferry operator for changes:
- SeaLink North Stradbroke Island: sealink.com.au/north-stradbroke-island/
- SeaLink SMBI: sealink.com.au/bay-islands/
- Amity Trader: amitytrader.com or Facebook
If you find it hard to move quickly or have special or medical needs:
- Use your Person-Centred Emergency Plan (P-CEP) now if you have one
- If anyone in your house uses powered medical equipment, such as a dialysis machine or ventilator, decide now where you will go in case you lose power

- A personal water supply
- A week’s supply of essential medications
- Personal hygiene items, including hand sanitiser

Secure your property
Check your property for loose items and ensure they are packed away or securely tied down. This includes outdoor furniture, pot plants, garden ornaments and trampolines.
Reinforce windows and clear gutters and drains.
Ensure your car is filled with fuel and garaged safely with the handbrake on.
If you expect your property to flood, consider moving vehicles, boats and caravans to higher ground and raise items in your house.
As the cyclone approaches, turn off and unplug all non-essential electrical equipment.
Check on your neighbours
Make sure your neighbours are aware of the threat and check on them after the cyclone has passed.
During the cyclone
Stay inside and shelter in the strongest part of the building, this is often the bathroom, toilet or hallway.
Use mattresses and blankets to protect yourself and your family.
Beware of the calm eye of the cyclone and stay inside as the wind will rapidly return.
Stay informed via the Redlands Coast Disaster Dashboard, ABC radio and television, and monitor updates from emergency services.
Do not expect emergency services to be able to respond during the event.
After the cyclone
Stay inside until officially advised that the cyclone has passed.
Stay well clear of fallen power lines. Always assume that fallen powerlines are live.
Stay out of floodwaters and drains.
Stay informed via the Redland Coast Disaster Dashboard, ABC radio and television, and monitor updates from emergency services.
