Construction of a new Youth and Community Centre on Macleay Island is expected to start in 2025.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said a report tabled at yesterday’s General Meeting (18 December) provided details on recent community feedback, the awarding of $1 million in external funding for the centre’s construction and next steps.

“The new centre aims to increase recreational, education, health and social opportunities for residents living on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” the Mayor said.

“The draft concept design proposes both a youth focus as well as a meeting and activity space for all.

“There is a real need for a facility such as this.

“There is also a need for multipurpose spaces with meeting and counselling rooms available for mainland service outreach to support residents.”

The centre is funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with Redland City Council.

Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said: “Facilities like these provide a great place for locals to meet and run events which strengthens community bonds.”

“The Crisafulli Government is delighted to help support Redland City Council deliver this new centre for the residents of Macleay Island and surrounds,” she said.

In September, Redland City Council invited residents to provide input on the services, programs and activities that could be offered at the centre, to be built at 32–40 Central Road on vacant land behind the Macleay Island Community Hall.

Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said survey responses and meetings with residents indicated support for an activated space with opportunities for education and training.

“Council officers have subsequently been liaising with training providers regarding building and kitchen design for provision of courses such as general education, hospitality and bakery,” Cr Rendalls said.

Construction of the centre is expected to start in late 2025.
