Redland City residents are urged to check their backyards for possible mosquito breeding sites following heavy rain and localised flooding associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The heavy rain, coupled with warm temperatures, has provided ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.
Redland City Council’s Mosquito Management Team has been checking known mosquito breeding sites and is conducting both ground and aerial treatments in response to elevated mosquito numbers.
Aerial Treatments are being conducted today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) in the following areas:
- Wellington Point
- Thornlands
- Victoria Point.
Ground treatments have been conducted this week using backpack blowers, quad bikes and ATVs in the following areas:
- Thornlands
- Capalaba
- Thorneside
- Birkdale
- Wellington Point
- Cleveland
- Victoria Point
- Redland Bay
- Russell Island
- Macleay Island
- Karragarra Island
- Lamb Island.
Residents cleaning up in the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred are urged to protect themselves and their properties from mosquitoes by:
- Wearing clothing that is long, loose-fitting and light in colour when venturing outdoors
- Applying insect repellents (natural repellents can also be used) particularly to areas that are exposed and not protected by clothing
- Using mosquito coils or plug-in insecticide burners
- Treating normal flyscreens with UV stable insecticide surface spray
- Emptying pooled water from pot plant bases, containers and tarps
- Maintaining and chlorinating swimming pools.
