The final polish is being put on the military brass for this weekend’s inaugural Freedom of Entry to Redland City.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the event would see 150 armed Royal Australian Air Force personnel march on the city during a day of celebration that will offer plenty for local families, particularly during the current school holidays.
“This tradition dates back to medieval times when armed forces would march to a city’s walls where they would be challenged by city representatives before being allowed to enter with their weapons sheathed, to show their peaceful intention,” she said.

“In addition to the ceremony that comes with this unique event, there will also be a great deal of colour and excitement for local families, including Air Force displays in the Cleveland Library Square such as trained RAAF dogs and an armoured military vehicle (Protected Mobility Vehicle).
“In the Cleveland Library staff will get in the spirit of the event by wearing medieval costumes and there will also be a display of World War One memorabilia on loan from Redlands RSL Museum.
“Military members will march in ceremonial attire displaying medals, carrying swords and rifles and military colours. They will be accompanied by a military band and mounted police, so there will be plenty of activity.
“Redland City’s Town Crier Max Bissett will be part of the festivities along with Air Force cadets who will be handing out commemorative programs.
“The tradition and fanfare of this event is not to be missed, so I encourage all locals and visitors to line the street to witness the parade.”
Division 6 Councillor Julie Talty said the event would also hold special significance leading up to Anzac Day.
“During the event the Redlands will bestow the age-old honour of Freedom of Entry to the City to the No.95 Wing of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF),” she said.
“The No.95 Wing is the Air Force’s response wing and are often the first on ground to assist following a disaster, so it is appropriate that these remarkable men and women are recognised leading up to Anzac Day.
“The Redlands also has a proud military history and many local cadets, so it is understandable that there is an air of excitement leading up to this weekend. The event will go ahead rain or shine, so bring the kids and camera.”
Come along to the Air Force Ceremonial Parade
11am Saturday 12 April 2014 – Middle Street, Cleveland
Get ready to cheer as the Redlands celebrates awarding of Freedom of Entry to the City to the No. 95 Wing of the Royal Australian Air Force.
- 10:30am Military members, supported by local air cadets and a band, will gather outside the Redland Performing Arts Centre.
- 10:45am Redland City Mayor Karen Williams will inspect the parade and present the official scroll offering Freedom of Entry to Redland City to Group Captain Peter Davis, who will formally request permission to march through Cleveland.
- 11:00am Official parade commences along Middle Street, Cleveland
As part of the ceremony, marchers will be challenged by the police officer in charge outside the Redland Art Gallery, before passing Library Square, where they will offer traditional salutes to the Mayor and Air Commodore Tim Innes.
The march will then continue along Middle Street toward the Redlands RSL.
All Redlanders – and visitors – are encouraged to line Middle Street to show their support and cheer the contingent along the parade route.
