Council is urging residents to have their say now about proposed local law changes that include relaxing dog restrictions in two of the city’s parks.
The proposed amendments to Subordinate Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) would:
- permit dogs on-leash at W.H. Yeo Park, Victoria Point and at Wellington Point Reserve before 9am and after 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (dogs are currently prohibited at W.H. Yeo Park at all times and at Wellington Point Reserve on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).
- add the current off-leash exercise area adjacent to the Redlands Softball Park at Sturgeon Street, Ormiston (This area is fenced and Council has completed a successful dog off-leash trial there.).
- remove two designated off-leash exercise areas at Flinders Beach and Amity Point North Stradbroke Island (these areas are now part of the Minjerribah Recreation Area and Council has relinquished its trusteeship of this State land).
Division 1 Cr Wendy Boglary welcomed Council’s decision to amend the Local Law that could see dog owners walk their dogs on-leash at Wellington Point Reserve before 9am and after 4pm on weekends and public holidays, saying that the dog ban had been put in place a number of years ago and needed to be updated to reflect modern lifestyles.
“An increasing number of people walk in the early mornings, late afternoons and nights. Having their dogs on-leash presents no real public safety concerns during these times – the original reason for the restriction,” Cr Boglary said.
To have your say, written submissions must be received at Council by 26 March 2013 stating your support or opposition to the proposed amendment, and the reasons you support your view. A decision is expected at the Council meeting 17 April 2013.
